With over 25 years of experience, Michael Silhol has been guiding healthcare providers through an increasingly complex regulatory environment, allowing them to achieve their financial, operational and strategic goals.
Michael is Board Certified in Health Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He was General Counsel at Radiologix, Inc., a publicly-traded national provider of diagnostic imaging services, and Parkland Health and Hospital System, one of the nation’s largest and most well-known public hospitals. Michael also was the Vice President of Legal Operations for Triad Hospitals, Inc. and Operations Counsel for HCA, Inc.
Michael began his legal career in the U.S. Army as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps, where he was assigned to Darnall Army Medical Center at Ft. Hood, Texas.
Michael now provides legal advice and counseling to healthcare providers in transactional, operations, regulatory, and compliance matters. His clients include hospitals, imaging centers, physician groups, ambulatory surgical centers, home health agencies and hospitalists.
Hospitals have retained Michael to structure a variety of transactions, including joint ventures with other hospitals, acquisitions of physician practices, divestitures of imaging centers and development of outpatient networks. Michael also works with hospitals in drafting medical staff bylaws, counseling on physician peer review, structuring transactions with referral sources, investigating HIPAA privacy issues, and conducting internal investigations.
He represents physician groups in transactions involving physician-owned ventures, development of ambulatory surgery centers and relationships with device manufacturers. Likewise, home health agencies, pharmacies and DME providers have requested Michael to represent them in transactions, recoupment actions by payors and in Medicare and Medicaid fraud investigations.
A frequent writer and speaker, with articles published on a variety of health law topics including healthcare reform, fraud and abuse, and physician integration, Michael stays current in the rapidly-developing world of health care.
Michael is a magna cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He obtained his law degree from the University of Wisconsin, where he graduated cum laude and was Managing Editor of the Wisconsin Law Review and elected to Order of the Coif.
Michael has served on the national boards of several organizations. From 2007 – 2013, he was on the Board of Directors of the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA), the nation’s largest, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) educational organization devoted to legal issues in the healthcare field with more than 12,500 members. Michael also served on the Board of Governors of the Federation of American Hospitals, the national representative of investor-owned and managed community hospitals and health systems throughout the United States and one of Washington, DC’s most respected and influential health policy and advocacy organizations. From 1994 to 2001, he was on the Board of Directors of AFS – USA, Inc., a leader in intercultural learning that offers international exchange programs in more than 40 countries around the world.
